The Volvo PV544, also known as the "Katterug" (second version), was produced between 1958 and 1965.
The PV544 was a modernized version of the Volvo PV444 and, technically, a completely different car. However, in terms of appearance and body design, both models clearly belong to the same Volvo PV series.
Volvo's introduction of the monocoque body posed challenges for independent coachbuilders. For this reason, Volvo introduced a model with a separate chassis. Since the launch of the PV444, Volvo had realized that the monocoque construction made it very difficult, if not impossible, to create unique bodies for special customers. Developing other variants was also significantly harder compared to a separate chassis.
This led Volvo to take the unusual step of going backward with the introduction of the PV445, a chassis version of the PV444. This model used components such as the engine, electrics, transmission, brakes, and front suspension of the PV444 but featured a separate chassis. This innovation allowed for the quick, easy, and affordable development of new variants, such as light commercial vehicles capable of carrying around half a ton.
With the PV445 available, coachbuilders could develop unique designs, including convertibles. However, fewer than 40 convertibles were produced by three different coachbuilders, with Valbo and Ringborg producing 22 and 15 units, respectively.
This vehicle:
This car is not one of those original convertibles but is inspired by them. A Swedish coachbuilder added a separate chassis under the bodywork. The rear suspension consists of a rigid axle with both springs and shock absorbers.
Although the car has an attractive appearance, it should be classified as an older restoration with some room for improvement, such as a cracked side window and slight dirt at the bottom.
