The BMW 315 is a beautiful projection BMW’s rich history, the German car manufacturer which we still know as the producer of high-quality German luxury cars. Initially, BMW was an aircraft engine builder, moving away from after WWI to build cars and motorcycles was perhaps the best decision they could have made. The BMW 315 played a crucial role in the early days of the Bavarian automaker to put itself on the map. It was produced from 1934 to 1937 and still today this early BMW leaves no enthusiast untouched.
Before the BMW 315, the BMW 303 was released in 1932. The 303 was powered by a six-cylinder engine with a small displacement of 1.2 litres, which was considered ‘small’ by pre-war six-cylinder standards. The engine produced only 30 horsepower at 4000 rpm and was quite basic. Nevertheless, it was not a bad start for BMW, considering they were relatively inexperienced as car manufacturers. Soon after, in 1934, a faster and more powerful variant was introduced as the successor to the 303, the 315. The 315 featured the same six-cylinder engine under the bonnet, but with a larger displacement of 1490 cc. This bigger engine had a power output of 34 horsepower, which was enough to achieve a top speed of one hundred kilometres per hour or 62 miles per hour, a milestone worth boasting about at that time.
In addition to its powerful engine and six-cylinder appearance, the BMW 315 brought even more defining features to the automotive sector. It was available as a convertible with seating for two or four passengers, or as a closed saloon model. Furthermore, it featured the well-known and still iconic BMW grille, which was first seen on the 303 and its variants, including the relatively performance-oriented 315.
The BMW 315 set the tone for the design of the famous grille, often referred to as the ‘kidney grille’ due to its shape. Additionally, the early six-cylinder engine - that was used in BMW sports cars for decades - and the commercial boom of the 315 helped establish BMW as a prominent car manufacturer. A 315 is an essential addition to any car collection.
