The Porsche 911/996 was introduced to the public in 1997. It was the 5th generation Porsche 911. It was clearly different from previous generations, both inside and out. It was criticized when it was released, especially because of the front headlights of its little sister, the Boxster. In addition, from the sixth generation, the 997 released in 2004, and even on the last 996 model, the headlights resume their original design. Another important change: the engine was now cooled by water, and not by air as had been the case since its launch in 1963. Notable improvements were also made to the chassis.
